7-MILE BRIDGE RUN CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY ON APRIL 9 OVER THE FLORIDA KEYS
KEY WEST, Fl. —April 9, 2011—The Marathon Runners Club is currently accepting applications for the 30th annual 7-Mile Bridge Run. The run will begin on Knight’s Key on the east side of the bridge at 7 a.m. and finish on Little Duck Key on the west side of the bridge at 9 p.m. Fifteen hundred runners will be selected with no consideration of disability or age to compete.
The 7-Mile Bridge Run is hosted by The Marathon Runners Club to commemorate the completion of the “new” bridge built 30 years ago to connect two of Florida’s Keys. Traffic will be stopped in both directions during the run to ensure the runner’s safety. Once the run is over, all contestants are invited back to Knight’s Key to enjoy a musical performance and socialize.
“The bridge run, supported financially by many local businesses,” says a Keys local marathon runner, “is one of the best organized marathons in the country.”
Divisions within the run traditionally include: men, women, children, age 75 and older, and wheelchair, with prizes awarded to top finishers. School busses will drive down the bridge 15 minutes prior to the finish to pick up any contestants still trying to finish. Many enter for the fun of the event, having no real chance of winning, wanting only to “beat the bus”. Water and wet sponges will be available at the end of the run on Little Duck Key.
Interested participants can send a business envelope to The Marathon Runners Club at Marathon Runners Club, P.O. Box 500110, Marathon, FL 33050 to request an application. The fee for the 2011 race will be announced in the application.
The Marathon Runners Club is a small group of people who host marathons for local youth organizations on the Florida Keys. For more information on the different marathons this year, call (305) 395- 7040 or email marathonrunners@gmail.com.
